Breeo vs Solo Stove

September 19, 2020 by Outdoor Eager 3 Comments

Solo Stove Ranger, one of the most in demand smokeless fire pits, is a light and compact fire pit that can be carried with you to outdoor activities.

Portable fire pits are not only handy heat sources but they also create a great ambiance in your backyard or at your campsite.

Over the last few years most of the fire pit companies started to design portable smokeless fire pits and today I’ll be comparing the two smokeless fire pits in demand, Breeo vs Solo Stove.

In summary, Solo Stoves are much lighter and compact than Breeo Stoves therefore not only they can be used at your backyard but they can also be carried with you to your outdoor adventures, Breeo Stoves on the other hand are more of a heavy-duty backyard fire pits and they’re the better option if cooking on your fire pit is an important factor for you.

Detailed Comparison of Breeo vs Solo Stove

Portability

I wanted to start the comparison with portability, because, it’s the biggest difference between the two fire pits, and Solo Stove is the clear winner here.

Weight

Although they have several sizes which I’ll be covering below, Breeo Double Flame 19″ and Solo Stove Bonfire has nearly the same diameter, but Bonfire weighs less than half of Breeo Double Flame.

With a weight of 20 lbs (9.07 kg), Solo Stove Bonfire is portable enough to be lifted and brought to your campsite, If you’re looking for a stove/firepit primarily for bringing with you to the backcountry, then I recommend Solo Stove Ranger (read my review or view on Amazon) with a weight of 15 lbs (6.8 kg) it’s the perfect option for outdoor adventures.

Breeo Double Flame 19" weighs 48 lbs and has a built-in feet. It is not preferable to bring this fire pit with you to the backcountry.

Breeo Double Flame, on the other hand, weighs 48 lbs (21 kg) therefore is not light enough to bring with you to the backcountry, but it’s portable enough to carry around in your backyard from time to time.

So, if you’re thinking of purchasing a fire pit that you can pack and take with you to your camping site, then Solo Stove is a suitable option for you.

Packed Size

One of the big differences of Breeo vs Solo Stove is, Breeo has built-in feet that cannot be unattached, Solo Stove, on the other hand, doesn’t have any feet and you don’t actually need one if you don’t want to put your stove/fire pit on a heat-sensitive surface.

If you’re thinking of placing your fire pit on a wooden deck, Solo Stove offers a stand (sold separately), and not only this stand acts as feet to lift the stove higher to not to damage the heat-sensitive surfaces, it can also be nested into the stove itself after you’re done with the fire pit.

And almost every fire pit accessories of Solo Stove such as the stand or shield can be nested into the stove, you can see it in the video below.

But that is not the case with Breeo Stoves, its accessories can’t be nested. Therefore if you’re thinking of taking your fire pit to the backcountry, Solo Stove suits you the best.

Sizes

Solo Stove is again the winner in this department, because, it offers three different sizes whereas Breeo has only two different sizes.

The three different Solo Stove sizes are from smallest to biggest; Ranger, Bonfire and Yukon:

If you’re just a couple who don’t have kids or if you need a portable fire pit for your RV camping, Breeo wouldn’t attract you because it would be too big for you, but Solo Stove Ranger would do the job.

Likewise, if you’re a very big family who’s looking for a backyard firepit, Solo Stove Yukon (read my review or view on Amazon) would be the better option compared to Breeo Double Flame 24″ since it offers a bigger volume thus bigger flame.

So the main reason why I declared Solo Stove as the winner in the department is, it appeals to a wider audience.

Durability

Both Breeo and Solo Stoves are made of 304 Stainless Steel which is a very durable and corrosion-resistant material, therefore they’re both extremely durable and offer longevity of years of use.

BUT I must give credit to Breeo Stoves here since they’re thicker, more robust than Solo Stoves and also, Breeo Stoves are made in the USA, Solo Stoves on the other hand are made in China.

So if durability is the main factor for you, you should go with the Breeo Stoves, but know that Solo Stoves are very durable as well.

Cooking

Breeo Double Flame 19" can be used as a grill for outdoor activities.

Nothing tastes better than the sausages roasted in the fire pit right? I know, but if you go further than roasting, such as grilling, these fire pits are not the most convenient ones, due to their solid design, they’re very hard to clean, and since they produce a great amount of heat, it’s a little bit hard to cook on them.

If cooking is your first priority I recommend Biolite Fire Pit (read my review or view on Amazon), it’s a very popular smokeless fire pit as well (which can also be used as a grill).

But for our Breeo vs Solo Stove comparison, Breeo is the clear winner in the cooking department. Because Breeo has invented a campfire grill that is compatible with Breeo fire pits, also since it’s very light it can be used separately as a grill in your outdoor adventures too.

Rather than that, Unlike Solo Stoves, there are two different types of Breeo firepits, Breeo Double Flame and Breeo X Series, with its sear ring and custom design Breeo X Series specifically made for wood fire cooking.

Smokeless Design

To be fair, there is no clear winner in this department. Both companies are using the same design and they’re equally smokeless.

Although they’re called smokeless fire pits, you will still see a little smoke especially when the fire is weak at the early stages, but they’re much smokeless compared to regular fire pits.

How do Breeo and Solo Stoves work?

This innovative design features a double-wall that has holes at the bottom of the outer wall and at the top of the inner wall. The cold air taken from the bottom holes gets heated through the wall and creates a secondary burn when leaving out from top holes and that causes fire to be smokeless.

Accessories: Breeo vs Solo Stove

Stand

Solo Stove Stand serves as a feet to Solo Stoves on a heat-sensitive surface.

This is the biggest difference in this department because Breeo has feet (attached to the main body of the stove) that raise the stove higher preventing damaging to heat-sensitive surfaces.

Solo stove, on the other hand, doesn’t have any feet, if you want to use it on a heat-sensitive surface you need to purchase the stand separately, that is the biggest disadvantage of Solo Stove.

View Solo Stove Stand on Amazon

Cooking Accessories

As I’ve mentioned above, Breeo is the better option for cooking especially the Breeo X Series. And it has a grill called Breeo Outpost (sold separately) on its line that is compatible with every Breeo fire pits.

The cool thing about this grill is you can adjust the height to your desired level, if the fire is too hot or if you’re cooking something that needs a low temperature you can just adjust the height of the grate at its maximum level, likewise if you need a really hot fire you can easily adjust the height of the grate to its minimum level.

Breeo Outpost Grill is compatible to every Breeo fire pits making Breeo Stove the better option Solo Stove for cooking.

View Outpost Grill on Amazon

Solo Stove, on the other hand, doesn’t have a grill in its line, if you want to cook with it you need to purchase a grill grate separately from a different brand, I would recommend Weber Hinged Cooking Grate for the Bonfire but you can get any cooking great that has a bigger diameter than the fire pit.

Although Solo Stove doesn’t have any compatible grill grate of its own, it has Roasting Sticks in its line, they might seem a little bit pricey but due to the material they’re made of (304 Stainless Steel), they’re very durable and corrosion-resistant.

View Solo Stove Roasting Sticks on Amazon

Fire Pit Lid & Cover

Breeo offers Breeo Double Flame Lid for covering your fire pit, Solo Stove on the other hand offers the Solo Stove Cover for protecting the fire pit. Although I compiled the two accessories in one section, contrary to what people think, they’re not exactly the same.

Breeo Double Flame Lid can be used for two purposes:

  • For protecting the stove from rain, although they’re made of corrosion-resistant material it’s good for the longevity of the fire pit to be protected from bad weather conditions
  • Safety, when you’re done with the fire pit you can just close the lid and go back home without thinking about the running fire at your backyard

And here comes to plot twist: 19″ Breeo Double Flame Lid is compatible with Solo Stove Bonfire as well.

View Breeo Double Flame Lid on Amazon

Solo Stove Protective Fire Pit Cover on the other hand, is only used for one purpose:

Solo Stove Fire Pit Cover protects your stove by covering every inch of the pit from bad weather condition.

  • Protecting your stove from rain and other bad weather conditions, since it’s not made of heavy-duty material like Breeo Double Flame Lid it can only be used after the fire is put out, but the advantage of this cover is, it’s a full cover, it doesn’t only protect the inside of the fire pit it covers every inch of the pit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breeo & Solo Stove

Can you pour water on Solo Stove?

You shouldn’t use water to put down the fire of Solo Stove, you should wait until the fire goes out, one way to speed up the process is covering the top of the stove with a lid, unfortunately, Solo Stove doesn’t feature a lid but since Breeo Double Flame Lid sits perfectly to the Solo Stove you can use Breeo Lid for that purpose.

Can you put Solo Stove on a deck?

Since the Solo Stoves have a raised ash pan, their bottom surface gets roughly up to 150 degrees. But that amount of heat can still damage heat-sensitive surfaces, if you’re thinking of putting your Solo Stove on a deck, you should purchase the Solo Stove Stand as well, and, always place your Solo Stove on non-combustible surfaces.

Can Breeo and Solo Stove get rained on?

You shouldn’t leave your stoves outdoors undercovered, getting rained on or other bad weather conditions can cause rusting and it would affect the longevity of your stove.

Can you use charcoal in a solo stove?

Solo Stove clearly explains in their instructions (you can see it here) that their Firepits are designed for using firewood logs for fuel only, Solo Stove Firepits may not function properly with any other fuel sources.

It’s worth noting that you shouldn’t use gasoline or any other flammable vapors/liquids in the vicinity of Solo Stove Fire Pits as well.

History of Breeo and Solo Stove

Solo Stove History

Solo Stove Products, such as Solo Stove Yukon, won numerous awards due to their unique designs.

The USA based company has entered the market in 2010 with only one unique and straightforward cooking stove. Over the years the brand has increased its product range very much. Now it makes grills, stoves, fire pits, and even apparels.

Due to their unique design, the Solo Stove products won numerous awards from big outdoor magazines, including the gear of the year award from 50 Campfires and Section Hiker.

A company that started in 2010 with only one cooking stove in its product line is now the first brand that pops into mind when talking about smokeless stoves and fire pits.

Breeo History

Breeo Double Flame 19" is made with sturdy design from an American company based in Lancaster/Pennsylvania.

Breeo is an American company based in Lancaster / Pennsylvania that has built their very first Smokeless Fire Pit way back in 2011.

Over the years Breeo didn’t expand its product range as much as Solo Stove, it has a niche product line that is mainly focused on fire pits and fire pit equipment for cooking such as portable grills.

Although the Brand is not as popular as Solo Stove, with its American-made sturdy design it’s definitely the second biggest brand in the market when it comes to smokeless fire pits.

Verdict – Breeo or Solo Stove

Although both Firepits are extremely quality and durable, there are some features where Breeo is superior to Solo Stove, and likewise, there are some factors where Solo Stove is the better option than Breeo. And if we sum those decisive factors up:

Get a Breeo If:

  • Grilling and Cooking on your stove is an important factor for you
  • You want a firepit made in the USA
  • You’re looking for a heavy-duty firepit
  • You don’t want to spend extra bucks for a stand for your firepit (Breeo Stoves designed with feet attached to the main body, with Solo Stove stands are sold separately)
  • You need a firepit mainly for your backyard
  • You like a more sturdy design

Get a Solo Stove If:

  • You want a light enough firepit that you can take with you to the backcountry
  • You need a portable firepit (every spare part of the Solo Stoves can be nested in the main body while traveling)
  • You want a relatively small firepit (Solo Stove Ranger is only 15″ wide and takes up very little space in your trunk but still gives the ambiance of a firepit)
  • You want a big firepit (Solo Stove Yukon is 27″ wide)

Biolite vs Solo Stove

August 11, 2020 by Outdoor Eager 5 Comments

Solo Stove Bonfire is an innovative smokeless portable stove that is perfect for any outdoor activity.

For any outdoor activity, there are a few things that are essential to have, and a convenient stove is one of them. And if you’re looking for an innovative smokeless stove there are only two big brands, and in this article, I will be comparing them, Biolite vs Solo Stove.

I will cover everything you need to know for both brands and their innovatively designed stoves by focusing on their top models, Solo Stove Bonfire vs Biolite Fire Pit.

In summary, if you want a smokeless fire pit for your backyard that would create a beautiful ambiance and that is portable enough to bring with you to your car camping site, Solo Stove Bonfire is the better option for you. But if you’re thinking of buying a smokeless fire pit which you can cook with and if you need it mainly for camping, in that case, Biolite Firepit is the better option for you.

Solo Stove Bonfire vs Biolite Fire Pit

Cooking

One of the biggest differences between the two fire pits is whether you can cook with them or not.

Unlike Solo Stove Bonfire, the main purpose of Biolite Fire Pit is cooking. It comes with a convenient cooking grate (I say convenient because you can slide it off and leave it like that to put more wood or charcoal to the fire pit without the need of holding the cooking grate with your hands).

And also it has a fuel rack, inside the fire pit, if you want to use charcoal instead of firewoods, you can raise the rack so the fire would be closer to the food.

Biolite Fire Pit is perfect for cooking. It comes with a convenient cooking grate that can slide to put charcoal with ease.

Also, you can use it as a simple fire pit as well; for just getting warm, creating a good ambiance, or roasting your sausages outdoors.

For the Solo Stove Bonfire, if we speak of food-wise, it’s mainly used for roasting sausages and marshmallows, not for cooking food, therefore, it doesn’t even come with a cooking grid.

The main reason you can’t cook with Solo Stove Bonfire (or other Solo Stove Fire Pits such as Solo Stove Ranger and Solo Stove Yukon) is it’s all in one piece. If you drop food while cooking, it’s very hard to clean, and nearly impossible to take it away without blowing out the fire.

However, if you really want to go with the Solo Stove and also cook with it, it’s not impossible, you can just purchase a cooking grate such as Only Fire – Round Fire Pit Grate and you can use it.

But, if being able to cook on your fire pit is the most important factor for you, then Biolite Firepit would be a much better option for you, it’s much easier to cook with and more convenient.

Smokeless Design

Firstly, both fire pits are smokeless, the difference here is the way they provide this smokeless fire.

Solo Stove Bonfire intakes cold air from the bottom vent holes and creates a secondary burn through the top vent holes.

Solo Stove integrates the laws of thermodynamics to its design to create a smokeless fire, it intakes cold air from the bottom vent holes and creates a secondary burn through the top vent holes, resulting in a hotter smokeless fire.

So, no matter on what condition you use it, Solo Stove provides a smokeless fire.

See the Solo Stove Bonfire Customer Reviews on Amazon

But that is not the case with Biolite Firepit, Biolite owes its smokeless fire to its fan system. When the fan is on, there is no smoke but if the battery goes down and the fan stops working, you would get a smoky fire.

See the Biolite Firepit Customer Reviews on Amazon

It might sound a little bit harsh, but it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, because, since Biolite offers a battery capacity of 24 hours (if you use it on the lowest fan level), the battery probably will never go down.

Also, if you think you would forget charging your stove before your outdoor adventure, Biolite features a Solar Charging Carrying Case, the carrying case would do the charging job for you.

Weight & Packed Size

Weight-wise, there is no difference at all, Solo Stove Bonfire weighs 20 lbs / 9.07 kg and Biolite Firepit weighs 19.8 lbs / 8.98 kg.

But Bonfire is not the only size of Solo Stove there are also the smaller size Solo Stove Ranger and bigger size Solo Stove Yukon. In case Bonfire might be big or small for you, I’ve also compiled the specs of other Solo Stove Firepits as well.

Although there is not a big difference in the weight department, there is a significant difference in the portability department.

With its foldable legs and rectangular design, Biolite Fire Pit is much portable than Solo Stove and it packs down even smaller than Solo Stove Ranger (Smallest fire pit on the Solo Stove’s line), but the trade-off here is the capacity.

With that being said let’s dive into the next chapter.

Capacity

First things first, although Biolite presents Biolite Fire Pit as a “Fire Pit”, it’s more like a technological grill “that can also be used as a fire pit”.

Solo Stove Bonfire, on the other hand, with its cylindrical, large and voluminous design is truly a Fire Pit.

Just like a regular grill, Biolite Fire Pit has a rectangular design, it’s a clever design for cooking, but not very efficient if you want to use it as a fire pit because rectangular stoves offer less capacity than cylindrical stoves.

And for the Solo Stove vs Biolite comparison, the volume of Biolite Fire Pit is almost the quarter of Solo Stove Bonfire.

biolite fire pit

solo stove bonfire

If I have to put it another way, Biolite Fire Pit can take a maximum of 4 pieces of wood, but with the Solo Stove Bonfire, this number goes up to 10 firewoods.

Therefore if you go with the Solo Stove Bonfire you get more heat and more fire.

Durability

Solo Stove has a more robust design and it’s made of more durable material (304 Stainless Steel), therefore it’s more corrosion resistant and long-lasting.

So for the Solo Stove Bonfire vs Biolite Firepit comparison, Solo Stove is the clear winner in the longevity department.

Features of Solo Stove Bonfire and Biolite Firepit

In the features and innovativeness department, I must give credit to Biolite Firepit, but before jumping into the features, I should add a quick note to correct a very common misunderstanding about Biolite Firepit.

Unlike Biolite Campstove, Biolite Firepit doesn’t use the thermoelectric generation technology to charge itself, you need to charge it at home or purchase the Biolite Firepit Solar Charging Carrying Case (sold separately), and leave it to a place where it can take the sun for 3 or 4 days.

So, let’s start with the features of Biolite Firepit.

Biolite: Technology

Biolite Firepit has a yellow device attached to its sidewall (which you might be familiar with). And what does this device do:

  • It has a fan inside, and with the help of this fan and the whole design of the Biolite Firepit, you get a smokeless fire.
  • This fan also has several levels, so you can increase the level and get a stronger fire.
  • You can control the level of the fan by pressing the button on the device, or you can use the Biolite App and connect to the device via Bluetooth and control the fire with your phone.
  • And lastly, this device also acts as a big power bank, you can use it to charge your phone or for other electronic devices such as Biolite Powerlight.

This device has a battery capacity of 24 hours when used in low-level (10 hours in mid-level, 5 hours in high-level).

Small Note: You don’t have to carry the whole firepit to charge this device. You can detach it, charge it in your home, and assemble it back to the stove very easily.

Biolite: Fuel Rack

Another cool feature of the Biolite Firepit is its dual-fuel system. You can use either firewood or charcoal, and for using charcoal all you need to do is to attach the fuel rack to the clips to raise it closer to the food.

This is also one of the biggest differences of Solo Stove Bonfire vs Biolite Firepit:

With Biolite Firewood you can use both firewood and charcoal, but with Solo Stove, you can only use firewoods as fuel.

Biolite Firepit has an X-ray Mesh that allows you to see the 360-degree view of the flame.

Biolite: X-ray Mesh

Biolite Firepit features an X-ray Mesh which gives you a 360-degree view of your flame. it doesn’t just create a great ambiance, it also helps you to see whether you need to add more fuel or not.

Even though it looks very cool with the X-ray mesh, due to its grill-like design, it’s not as great as Solo Stove Bonfire when it comes to creating a great ambiance.

Solo Stove: Design

As I’ve mentioned earlier, both Biolite and Solo Stove provides a smokeless fire, unlike Biolite, Solo Stove does this by using the laws of thermodynamics, so you don’t need an extra energy/fan power to create this smokeless fire.

Solo Stove Bonfire, is better than Biolite Firepit in terms of appearance. It has "Fire Pit-like" design that can create a beautiful ambiance.

Solo Stove actually has a cylindrical, “Fire Pit-like” design, so if you’re thinking of placing the firepit to your backyard rather than taking it outdoors, Solo Stove Bonfire would look much cooler than Biolite Firepit, and it would create a better ambiance (this doesn’t mean that you can’t take Solo Stove Bonfire to outdoors, you can).

Therefore, unlike Biolite, Solo Stove presents the Bonfire as a backyard fire pit that is portable enough to take to your car camping site.

Accessories of Solo Stove Bonfire and Biolite Firepit

Biolite Firepit Solar Charging Carrying Case

Biolite features only one, very innovative accessory for its fire pit and that is the Biolite Firepit Solar Charging Carrying Case.

Since you need to charge the Biolite Firepit to get a smokeless fire, Biolite thought of integrating a solar panel to its durable waterproof nylon carrying case, so you wouldn’t actually have to detach and charge the stove every time after you use it.

With the amount of energy that integrated solar panel provides, it takes 3-5 days (depending on the solar radiation level at your location) to fully charge the fire pit.

Solo Stove Ranger vs Bonfire

August 7, 2020 by Outdoor Eager 2 Comments

Solo Stove Bonfire is a smokeless firepit that is perfect for a backyard activity or campsite of a regular size group.

When it comes to portable fire pits, there is only one brand that pops into mind, Solo Stove. The question here is “which model is the right one for you”. In this Solo Stove Ranger vs Bonfire comparison, I’ll help you choose the ideal size (model) for you.

In summary, just like any other Solo Stove, Ranger and Bonfire have the same smokeless design, the only difference is their size and capacity. Solo Stove Bonfire is great if you’re a regular size family who’re thinking of placing the stove at their backyard and maybe take it to their campsite sometimes. But if you’re just a couple without kids or a solo camper and if you’re thinking of taking the stove to outdoors more than using it at your backyard, in that case, Solo Stove Ranger is the better option for you.

Go straight to the detailed comparison.

Why Solo Stove

The short answer is: Solo Stove created the unique smokeless design, and thanks to them, now breathing around the fire is possible.

Solo Stove is not an ancient brand, they’re in the outdoor market for only a decade but just like every other big-brand in the world, they created something unique, therefore, they’re the first brand that pops into mind in the outdoor community when we talk about wood-burning stoves.

In 2010 they joined the outdoor market by creating the first smokeless wood-burning stove. Up until then, there was no such thing as a smokeless stove.

This patented design basically has a double wall and vent holes. This design intakes cold air (from the bottom vent holes) creates secondary combustion and allows hotter air to feed the fire, resulting in a smokeless fire.

Solo Stove Ranger Overview

Solo Stove Ranger is very compact and portable with only 15 lbs weight and 15" diameter by 12.5" height.

  • WEIGHT: 15 lbs / 6.8 kg
  • MATERIAL: 304 Stainless Steel
  • DIMENSIONS: Ø 15″ (Base Diameter) x 12.5″ (Height)

Solo Stove Ranger is the newer model that came after the Bonfire. The main reason this stove is created is to fulfill the needs of those who find Bonfire too bulky to carry but still need a Fire Pit.

Those people are generally: small families, couples, fishermen, and RV/car campers. If you’re one of those people, at the end of the article, you will probably find that Solo Stove Ranger more suitable for your needs.

The great thing about Solo Stove Ranger is; it’s only 15 lbs (6.8 kg), packs down to Ø 15″ x 12.5″ but still gives you everything you should be looking for from a fire pit.

Just like any stove in the Solo Stove’s line, Ranger is made of 304 Stainless Steel which is a durable lightweight and corrosion-resistant material. So the perfect choice for a portable fire pit.

Lastly, it’s very compact and portable, every part that is not attached (such as the fire ring) to the stove can be nested in it.

Solo Stove Bonfire Overview

Solo Stove Bonfire is the first fire pit that was released by the brand and still the most popular model ever since it was sold in the market.

  • WEIGHT: 20 lbs / 9.07 kg
  • MATERIAL: 304 Stainless Steel
  • DIMENSIONS: Ø 19.5″ (Base Diameter) x 14″ (Height)

As I’ve mentioned before, Solo Stove Bonfire is the first fire pit that the brand came up with, and today it still is the most popular model.

The reason is, it’s the perfect size for placing your backyard and taking it to your car camping site from time to time.

It sure offers enough capacity for a family of four (if you’re a bigger family I would recommend Solo Stove Yukon), and it’s light enough to bring with you to the backcountry.

Just like Ranger, Solo Stove Bonfire is made of 304 Stainless Steel as well.

And last but not least, even though it’s not as portable as Ranger it’s still compact, every part of the stove (such as the Stand) can be nested in the main base of the stove. Therefore it packs down to Ø 19.5″ x 14″.

Both fire pits are easy enough to carry by one person, but although 5 lbs seem like a small difference, if you’re thinking of moving the fire pit a lot (by taking to camping every time), after a while, it might start to feel like a burden.

For small groups, Solo Stove Ranger is more than enough, and if you have a small patio or backyard it would fit perfectly.

Capacity

Volumetrically, Bonfire is twice the size of Ranger, and if you don’t mind the extra 5 lbs it offers enough fire capacity for a regular size family (four/five people).

Ranger, on the other hand, is not enough for a group of four, it would still do the job, but you would probably find it too small.

And if you’re buying a fire pit just for your backyard or your patio, then one important thing to consider is the size of your backyard. If it’s a really small place then Bonfire might not be a good option. So, to help you to get an idea of the sizes of the fire pits, here are pictures of Bonfire and Ranger.

solo stove bonfire

solo stove ranger

And, also, if you think neither of the fire pits is big enough for your backyard, I would recommend Solo Stove Yukon, it’s twice the size of Bonfire, you can also check out my review of Solo Stove Yukon and Bonfire.

Portability

Each fire pit has the same design, and this design allows the stoves to pack down quite easily. Every part of the stoves, including big parts such as the Fire Ring, Stand, or even the Shield (sold separately) can be nested in the stove.

Here is a quick video of Solo Stove Shield, but you can also see how everything can be nested in the stove:

So design-wise they’re the same. BUT volume-wise, Bonfire is almost twice as the Ranger and weighs roughly %50 less, therefore, Ranger is much compact and portable.

Cooking & Roasting

If you’ve ever used the smaller versions of Solo Stoves before (like Solo Stove Titan), it’s normal to think that you can cook easily with Solo Stove Ranger and Bonfire.

But, that is not the case, since both Solo Stove Ranger and Bonfire are all in one piece, it would be a huge burden to clean them. So most people just use these fire pits for roasting sausages and marshmallows.

Solo Stove Ranger is more preferred than Solo Stove Bonfire in terms of cooking because of it's smaller size that leads to easier cleaning.

Also, since they don’t have prongs like smaller Solo Stoves, it’s impossible to cook without getting a cooking grate. Solo Stove doesn’t provide or sell a cooking grid for its fire pits.

But some people buy fire pit cooking grate separately and use it with Solo Stove Ranger and Bonfire. In that case, I can recommend Only Fire – Round Fire Pit Grate.

Check out the latest price of Only Fire – Round Fire Pit Grate on Amazon

And for the comparison of Solo Stove Ranger vs Bonfire, if want to cook on your fire pit, I must say that Solo Stove Ranger would be a better choice for you.

But for roasting, there is no difference at all, you just need good Roasting Sticks, and you are good to go.

Accessories for Solo Stove Ranger & Bonfire

Some fire pit accessories are musts and some are just luxuries, but that also depends on your condition as well.

Therefore, I compiled every fire pit accessory of Solo Stove and gave information about them containing on what conditions the accessory is a must or a luxury.

Stand

The Solo Stove Stand is a very important accessory, especially if you’re thinking of taking your fire pit outdoors, to a friend’s house or somewhere else. Trying to find a way to keep your fire pit off the ground would be a big burden.

And since the bottom of the fire pit gets really hot, you should definitely use a stand on heat-sensitive surfaces.

Check the price of Solo Stove Stand on Amazon

But if you’re thinking of buying the fire pit just for your backyard, you can even create your own much better-looking stand. If you’re thinking of building your own stand on your backyard, just a quick note:

Do not build a wall around the fire pit big enough to block the bottom vent holes. If you do that you would prevent stove to intake cold air and that would cause a smoky fire.

Solo Stove Fire Wood Rack Station

A firewood rack station is not a must, but if you want a more organized space in your backyard, I would definitely recommend Solo Stove Fire Wood Rack.

It’s very durable and also if you don’t have a garage to store the fire pit, it has a shelf to store the fire pit as well and this shelf is big enough to store Solo Stove Bonfire as well.

Quick Reminder: If you don’t have a garage and if you’re thinking of storing your fire pit on the open air, you should also purchase the Solo Stove Shield, it’s an important accessory for the longevity of your stove. But if you’re thinking of storing the fire pit in a closed area (such as a garage) then the shield is not a must.

And last but not least, whether you go with the Solo Stove Fire Wood Rack or another one, a well designed Fire Wood Rack gives a great ambiance to the backyards.

Check the price of Solo Stove Fire Wood Rack on Amazon

Solo Stove Fire Pit Tools

Solo Stove Fire Pit Tools include an angled poker and a log grabber, as you might guess, it is not a must like a stand. You can just find something at home to grab the log, and you can just use a small wood stick to use as a poker.

But they are made of 304 Stainless Steel, therefore, they’re extremely durable and corrosion-resistant, and these tools make the job much easier.

Check the price of Solo Stove Fire Tools on Amazon

Solo Stove Shield

If you’re thinking of getting a portable fire pit for your wooden deck or if you’re thinking of placing the fire pit near heat-sensitive furniture, Solo Stove Shield is definitely a must for you.

Because no matter how well you control the flame, at some point sparks and embers will leave from the fire.

But if you’re thinking of using your fire pit outdoors or if you’re thinking of placing it on a stone surface at your backyard, then the shield is just a luxurious tool to ease your adventure.

Solo Stove Bonfire vs Yukon

August 5, 2020 by Outdoor Eager 2 Comments

Solo Stove Bonfire is the most popular model of Solo Stove fire pits that is perfect for backyard activities and car camping.

If you’re looking for a portable fire pit, it’s very likely to not being able to decide between Solo Stove Bonfire vs Yukon. They’re both great, innovative, smokeless fire pits that share a number of similarities, and a few differences.

In this article, I will help you to decide on the perfect option for you by covering everything you need to know about fire pits before you purchase one.

In summary, both stoves have the exact patented smokeless Solo Stove design. The main difference is the sizes and the capacity of the stoves. If you’re a family of four (or smaller) who likes outdoor activities, Bonfire is the better option for you, you can either use it on your backyard or carry it to your car campsite without it being a burden. But if need a fire pit for larger groups, Bonfire wouldn’t be enough for you, with 2.2 times bigger capacity Solo Stove Yukon would be the better option, you can carry Yukon to your campsite as well (but not as easy as Bonfire).

Detailed Comparison of Solo Stove Bonfire vs Yukon

Capacity

Solo Stove Bonfire is the optimum fire pit for a family of four or less, you can roast on it, use it to create a good ambiance for a weekend with your family (without using too many firewoods).

Solo Stove Yukon on the other hand is 2.2 times bigger than Solo Stove Bonfire (volume-wise). Therefore while Solo Stove Bonfire is enough for small families, Yukon would be too much, also due to its bigger interior volume it consumes much more wood and creates much more heat for four people (If they sit closely).

Solo Stove Bonfire vs Yukon Capacity Comparison

But if you’re a big family, let’s say you’re a grandfather who likes to have your children and grandchildren every other weekend (assuming more than 4 people), Bonfire would be small for you, in that case, Yukon is what you should go for.

Weight

If you’re buying this fire pit only for your backyard and don’t plan to move it from time to time then weight should be a concern for you.

But if you’re planning to take it to your car camping site then; know that Yukon (38 lbs) weighs almost twice as much of Bonfire (20 lbs).

Therefore, go for Yukon only if you really need that big of fire, otherwise, 38 lbs is not a small weight to be carried by one person, and after a while, it’d feel like a burden.

Weight

38 lbs / 17.23 kg

Portability

Both Solo Stove Bonfire and Yukon have exactly the same design, the only difference is their sizes.

The great thing about Solo Stove Fire Pits is, every part of the stoves can be nested into the stove;

  • Fire Ring (Comes with the stoves): Can be turned upside down and packed into the main base
  • Stand (Sold separately): Stands have smaller diameters than the stoves, therefore you can nest the stands into the stove.
  • Solo Stove Shield (Sold separately): Can be turned upside down and packed into the main base

Therefore, both Bonfire and Yukon can be packed down to their main size. For Bonfire packed size is Ø 19.5″ x 14″, for Yukon it’s Ø 27″ x 16″.

If you think, even Bonfire is big for you, Solo Stove also offer the Ranger model that is Ø 15″ (Base Diameter) x 12.5″ (Height), if you’re interested you can also check out my Solo Stove Ranger review.

Efficiency

Solo Stove Bonfire is more efficient than Yukon because it produces heat at a faster rate and is preferred to use for cooking.

When it comes to efficiency no doubt, Solo Stove Bonfire is much more efficient.

Firstly, it uses less firewood to start to fire. In addition to consuming a lot of wood because it is large, it also consumes faster because it creates more heat.

But, at the end of the day, it all comes down to how much heat and fire you actually need. If you’re a big group of people, you will need a bigger fire anyways.

Material

Both Bonfire and Yukon are made of 304 Stainless Steel, you might be familiar with the material since it’s very common in the kitchen equipment, but for those who’re not, 304 Stainless Steel is a highly heat-resistant material, and offers great corrosion resistance, therefore, it’s the perfect selection for a portable fire pit.

Since both fire pits are made of 304 Stainless Steel, there is no winner for the Solo Stove Bonfire vs Yukon material comparison, but I just wanted to inform you about the quality of the material.

Cooking

You can cook with both of the stoves using Roasting Sticks, but I should mention that; since Yukon can take much more wood, it creates a bigger flame and more heat, so when it’s fulled it’s a bit harder to stand near enough to roast.

Solo Stove Yukon is made of 304 Stainless Steel that offers high corrosion resistance despite of producing larger flames.

But, once you get the hang of it, you would understand how much wood you should use to create enough heat to get close enough.

And also, even though Solo Stove doesn’t feature a cooking grid accessory, some Bonfire users purchase a cooking grid separately and grill on it, but this is not a doable option for the Yukon, it creates to much heat to get so near enough to grill on it.

If you want a firepit where you can cook easily, check out my article about Biolite Firepit or Breeo Stove it’s a better option for cooking and it’s smokeless as well.

Compatibility

Solo Stove Shield

A shield for the fire pit might seem luxurious but it helps to prevent sparks and embers from leaving the fire pit. I highly recommend purchasing one if you’re thinking of using it on your wooden deck, or somewhere that can be damaged by the fire.

Solo Stove Shield is compatible with both Bonfire and Yukon. You just need to purchase the right size.

Check the latest price of Solo Stove Shield on Amazon

Solo Stove Roasting Sticks

Roasting Sticks are not a big necessity, you can even use the barbeque skewers at home (if you have one) or you can do it from wooden sticks by yourself.

But Solo Stove Roasting Sticks are highly durable (made of 304 Stainless Steel), easy to clean, and considering that it comes in 4 pieces, it’s not expensive at all.

Check the latest price of Solo Stove Roasting Sticks on Amazon

Solo Stove Stand

Solo Stove Stand is a tool to keep the base of the stove off the ground and avoid damaging heat-sensitive surfaces (like wooden decks). If you’re buying a Solo Stove for a specific place and don’t think of changing its place, then you can build your own stand (with marbles or stones).

But if you’re thinking about moving the stove sometimes or taking it outdoors, a stand would save you from the burden of building a stand every time you move it. In that case that is a very useful tool.

Solo Stoves makes different sizes of stands for each fire pit (Ranger, Bonfire, Yukon). And each stand is only compatible with the model it’s made for.

So, for instance, if you’re going for Yukon then don’t purchase Solo Stove Bonfire Stand just because it’s cheaper, go for Solo Stove Yukon Stand.

Check the price of Solo Stove Stand on Amazon

Solo Stove Fire Pit Shelter

Just like Stands, Solo Stove makes different sizes of Shelter for each fire pit (Ranger, Bonfire, Yukon).

If you’re thinking of moving your fire pit to your garage (or a place where it can be protected from rain, snow, etc.) after using it then a shelter is not a great necessity.

BUT, if you don’t have a garage or if you’re thinking of placing your stove to your backyard then you should definitely purchase a shelter.

They’re made of PVC Coated Water Resistant Polyester to provide extreme protection and they contain 6061 Reinforced Aluminum to provide robustness.

Solo Stove Yukon Review

Solo Stove Yukon is the biggest portable fire pit in the market that offers great fire capacity and weighs only 38 lbs.

  • WEIGHT: 38 lbs / 17.23 kg
  • MATERIAL: 304 Stainless Steel
  • DIMENSIONS: Ø 27″ (Base Diameter) x 16″ (Height)

Solo Stove Yukon is the biggest portable fire pit in the outdoor market. With the base diameter of 27″ and height of 16″, it offers a great fire capacity.

If you’re a big family or a family who likes to invite their friends over time to time. It’s a great option for your backyard. It’s very big, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be carried to your car campsite, even though it’s bulky, it weighs 38 lbs ( 17.23 kg).

It’s not ideal for a family of four (or less) since it’s a little bit harder to carry and uses a great amount of fuel (firewood). But, it would create the perfect fire and ambiance for large groups.

Frequently Asked Questions About Solo Stoves

Which one is better, Solo Stove Yukon 30 vs 27 inch?

Solo Stove Yukon actually has one size and it is 27″, the reason people came across with 30″ size is because Solo Stove Yukon initially joined the market with a diameter of 30 inches but after a while, they decided to change the diameter to 27 inches.

The main reason for that is 30″ size was too big to handle during the transportation process. Shipping partners weren’t able to keep the 30″ Yukon blemish-free by the time it reached the customers’ door and too many Solo Stove customers were receiving dented units.

Therefore after a lot of testing, Solo Stove has decided to reduce the diameter by 3 inches to minimize the dents caused by the transportation process. This diameter reduction also results in Solo Stove Yukon being 10 lbs lighter which makes it much easier to carry.

So, you might still encounter Solo Stove 30″ on the market but it’s best to go with the 27″ size, not only there is a risk of being dented during the shipment process with 30″ but also it will be much easier to find accessories that are compatible with 27 inches since it’s the newer size.

What size solo stove you should get?

Solo Stove firepits has three different sizes Ranger, Bonfire, and Yukon and they have the same design, they all provide the same features and they all are compatible with Solo Stove accessories the only difference is their size, the diameters of the stoves are 15″, 19.5″, and 27″, respectively.

When deciding what size solo stove to get, you should consider on what condition you will be using your fire pit and with how many people you will be using it. So go for:

  • Ranger, if you’re a family of two and if you like to take your stove to the backcountry from time to time, it’s the most portable and convenient size.
  • Bonfire, if you’re a family of four who would like to use the stove in both your backyard and outdoors.
  • Yukon, if you’re looking for a stove primarily for your backyard. You can take Solo Stove Yukon to your outdoor adventures as well, but keep in mind that it’s very bulky and takes a lot of space in your trunk, so if you need a stove/firepit mainly for your outdoor adventures Yukon might feel like a burden after a while).

Is solo stove worth it?

The quick answer is Yes they’re worth it. Although they might be a little bit expensive compared to other Solo Stove knock-offs in the market, Solo Stoves are made of 304 Stainless Steel which is a very durable material and Solo Stoves really provide a smokeless fire.

So they actually worth every penny, but if you’re on a budget, I would recommend SUNCOO Smokeless Firepit as a cheaper alternative.

MSR Windburner vs Jetboil Micromo

August 3, 2020 by Outdoor Eager 2 Comments

MSR Windburner is one of the most efficient systems that can prolong heat and fuel consumption with its remarkable radiant burner technology.

Eating hot and juicy meals during your camping trips can be an irreplaceable luxury.

Long walks in harsh natural conditions through different weather conditions can end with a pleasant lunch or dinner break thanks to a good canister stove. Either you’re a frequent camper or a complete novice, you will need a warm meal or a well-made coffee at the end of the day.

The evaluation between MSR Windburner vs Jetboil Micromo and the choice for this purpose will be beneficial for campers who try to decide for the most suitable alternative for their travels. In this article, I will explain the pros and cons of both of these systems so you may reach a final conclusion.

MSR Windburner is perfect in windy condition due to its heat exchange burners that can ignite without flame.

MSR Windburner Review

True to his name, MSR Windburner is built-in with a remarkable radiant burner technology. These types of heat exchanger burners ignite without flames so they are perfect in windy conditions.

This creates a very efficient performance in terms of prolonged heat and fuel consumption. If your destination is an open valley or upland soil, you might not have very good wind protection. Luckily MSR Windburner does not require external protection.

Jetboil Micromo Review

Jetboil Micromo is one of the fastest stove systems in the market and is superior in term of lightness and efficiency.

Jetboil Micromo distinguishes itself from its alternatives based on its power, in contrast to its size. It’s superior in terms of lightness and efficiency.

If you are looking for a lighter stove that is completely packed into one small unit Jetboil Micromo might fulfill this need.

This little powerhouse is one of the fastest stove systems without forsaking great simmer control. Even smaller than another Jetboil favorite Minimo; Jetboil Micromo’s pot size is only 0.8 L.; a good choice if you would like to save more space and weight in your backpack.

Check the latest price of Jetboil MicroMo

Compactness

All-in-one sturdy stove MSR Windburner is relatively heavier and it packs the stove burner, separate fuel canister, folding canister stand, and PackTowl into the compact 1 L pot. The gas canister is a separate item and 110g and 227g canisters can fit inside the Windburner.

It is compatible with other Windburner cookware such as 1.0 Personal Pot, optional 1.8 Duo pot. You cannot use it with WindBurner Stock Pot or Sauce Pot though. The pot, which safely locks onto the stove and canister, has also an insulated cozy.

Jetboil Micromo also has a compact design, you can pack the main stove, main burner head, 100 gr fuel canister, and canister stabilizer into the 0.8L pot.

Weight & Capacity

MSR Windburner weighs 15.5 oz with a liquid capacity of 1 liter (33.8 fluid oz) in contrast with Jetboil Micromo’s 12 oz weight with 0.8-liter liquid capacity (27.05 fluid oz).

Micromo is perfect for one person cooking. Those who want to travel with as little weight as possible might prefer Jetboil Micromo.

Features

MSR Windburner has, no doubt, a compact design. But this feature might bring its shortcomings. It’s best to note that MSR Windburner does not have a built-in piezo igniter so you need to use a lighter or a match to light the stove.

Jetboil Micromo comes with a built-in Piezo igniter so you won’t need a piece of additional lighting equipment. Every part including the fuel canister fits into the cup.

It’s very powerful thanks to its 6000 BTU burner but since it’s tight in design, it might be harder to fit drink-through lid into place and you may have issues shutting the stove. This stove also comes with a built-in pot cozy and preserver lid to save heat.

MSR Windburner comes with its own three-legged plastic canister stand to provide additional stability to the stove system. On the other hand, Jetboil Micromo comes with a fuel canister stabilizer as one solid plastic piece for additional stability.

Simmer Control

Jetboil Micromo is preferred in cooking food because of its simmer control that allows gradual heating through controlled burners.

I have to go on and just say Jetboil Micromo is a winner in this category. If great simmer control with complete stability is crucial for you, you might consider Jetboil Micromo which easily provides this with gradual heating through controlled burners.

Although its heat adjustments might be sensitive, it is designed to not just boil water but cooking food with help from its regulated valve.

MSR Windburner on the other hand has more power in his ignition capacity and it quickly reaches boiling temperature. This requires a little bit more attention to the boiling.

Both systems offer good simmer control but if speed is primary for you, you may go with MSR Windburner, if light simmering control for intricate meals and lengthy cooking processes is preferable then Jetboil Micromo is the one.

The Verdict

MSR Windburner (on the left) is the option if a wind-resistant all-in-one versatile stove systems is desired while Jetboil Micromo (on the right) is the option if a lightweight, cheaper, and has simmer control system is desired.

Both MSR Windburner and Jetboil Micromo are great all-in-one stove systems. I have listed their prominent features in this article.

If you prefer a wind-resistant all-in-one versatile stove system for serious backcountry trips for every season, you may go with MSR Windburner; if you want a lightweight, cheaper option that has added simmer control for your one-person daylong hiking you may go with Jetboil Micromo. In this case, since it is a good combination of integrated stove parts, you might be willing to pay the extra dollar to buy a Windburner to never have to think about challenging winds and cold weather on camping trips again. Higher altitudes and negative temperatures will not reduce MSR Windburner’s efficiency and performance.

Even though the MSR Windburner is slightly heavier and bigger with harder simmer control compared to Jetboil Micromo, I would think that its fuel-efficient design and sturdy composition is well worth its price to put into use through long years.

If you have a pot, you don’t need to purchase the whole stove system. You can just buy the Jetboil Mightymo and MSR Pocket Rocket Stoves separately.

Last but not least, neither of the stoves systems comes with the canister. Check out the latest prices of Jetboil Jetpower Fuel and MSR Isopro Canister Fuel.
